About This Blog

Today I decided that I don't want to live in New York anymore. Actually, I've been thinking that for a while; it just struck me as more of a resolute fact this time around, as opposed to a fleeting mood, or a knee-jerk reaction to the daily annoyances of city living, like getting a parking ticket or having to pay $7 for a pint of beer. I should probably mention that this epiphany occurred at the precise moment that I was sitting in the office of a realtor, preparing to sign another lease to continue living in the city for at least another year. You see, for various reasons, some complex and some not so much, I'm not going anywhere, at least for the time being. Why the blog, then? Part of my purpose is documentary: I'm curious how long it will take before I and my partner, who feels similarly, act on this realization (if we ever do; inertia can be a very powerful force). It's also partly contemplative: I plan to use this space to chart my misgivings about the city over time, to reflect on their merit, and to determine whether I really do belong somewhere else, or I'm just being a typical complainy New Yorker.
